Part
27.
Zeki returned, terribly angry. He slammed the car door so
hard it almost fell to pieces.
The Padrone was not pleased.
The car "survived," but then, the equally
violent slamming of the front door caused the large glass pane of the door to
fall, scattering into fine shards right at the top of the stairs.
The Padrone was furious and was just about to reprimand
Zeki when he encountered Dada’s blankly staring eyes.
Dada looked a bit frightened. She had the expression of
someone who felt,
"It is all my fault, but what can I do, this is
who I am."
It seemed to the Padrone that Dada approached the house
stumbling, and as she passed him, she turned her clouded eyes toward him; she
smelled terribly of vodka.
The Padrone froze in place out of pure astonishment.
It turned out that Dada had gotten lost from Zeki in the
city, and he had barely managed to find her. She was in some tavern, drinking
vodka along with beer alongside some drunken beggars.
The Padrone listened, stunned. He felt as though they
were telling him about someone completely different, not Dada.
Zeki would not calm down, insisting that
Dada had done this on purpose. It was strange. Only in
her writings did Dada remain the same old Dada: virtuous, kind, and loving. In
reality, however, she presented herself to everyone as a tiresome, headstrong,
and foolish girl, and how long would this go on?
Would that old Dada ever return?
"How heavy and painful life is, how it can
completely change a person."
The Padrone thought, looking down sadly at the sleeping
girl.
Dada’s room was also saturated with the smell of vodka.
"Everything is Ugo’s fault! It is that cursed
man’s fault! What did he want from this poor girl?
I even told him that she had nothing to do with it,
and if he wanted revenge, he should settle it with me...
Although, why
should I blame him?
It is a good
thing he left and got out of our way in time.
He spared Dada, and me along with her! Hmm, he left
without even looking back. It is a marvel;
I could not find his trail anywhere.
Ugo!.. Ugo!..
Why the hell did you come here!
Many people used to think Dada was foolish before, but
it was the opposite.
Eh, she acted much more intelligently before.
Now, she does stupid things, and she herself doesn’t
know why?
What is she trying to achieve?
Thank God that Zeki didn’t find out anything about
Ugo; it’s a good thing that nothing reached his ears, otherwise who knows?
Terrible things would have happened.
They would have surely killed each other.
Hmm, Ugo escaped just in time!"
The Padrone was waiting for Dada to sober up. He had had
enough of her senseless behavior. He seriously wanted to talk to her; although
he had avoided it before, not wanting to hurt the girl's feelings, now he would
hold nothing back. He would even mention Ugo and imply that...
The Padrone’s train of thought was interrupted by a
servant. He announced the arrival of a guest.
The guest with the dangerous eyes was already waiting in
his office.
