Part 34.
The man with the dangerous eyes had everything thought
out and well-planned in advance. He had even bribed some of the Padrone's
servants a long time ago. First, it was necessary to get rid of the dogs. Then,
it would all begin with what seemed to be a simple fire. First, they would burn
down the estate yard and the huge fruit orchard running alongside it. Then the
vineyard, the stable,
And then...
Ugo silently nodded at everything, even showing him ways
to sneak into the yard from different sides, but when he learned that
everything was ready for the attack and it was to happen that very night, his
heart sank.
No matter how hard he tried, or what arguments he used to
somehow postpone the attack time, even if only to have one day in reserve, the
man with the dangerous eyes stubbornly refused. He understood perfectly well
that Ugo would use that one day to sabotage his revenge plan again. Therefore,
as soon as he learned that Ugo still wanted to participate, he immediately
demanded an attack on the Padrone that very evening.
At first, he resisted, pretending he didn't want to
trouble Ugo too much. He even hinted that he needed him for something else. But
Ugo still stubbornly demanded,
"Give me the right to redeem my previous
crime."
Then the man with the dangerous eyes offered Ugo half the
pay. Ugo agreed anyway.
The man was now even more convinced that Ugo was not
doing this for money at all and had an entirely different plan.
"I wonder what that son of a bitch is
planning?"
He thought to himself.
"Once a traitor, always a traitor."
The man with the dangerous eyes thought, and he was
right.
Ugo was certainly not a trustworthy man. Not only was he
untrustworthy, but on the contrary, he now seemed even more dangerous to him;
therefore, he did not change the agreed-upon time, so as not to give him any
leeway. He assigned two gypsies to him, categorically ordering them not to
leave his side and, as soon as the deed was done, to kill Ugo right there.
According to the plan, Ugo was not supposed to approach
the house; he would only look after the yard and the premises, while others
would enter the house. The man had calculated this well, too, realizing
perfectly well that Ugo could not be trusted in any way.
Ugo had no other choice left; he had to reveal the secret
entrance to Dada's house. By doing this, he would gain a little more trust and
would be able to approach the house more easily.
The man with the dangerous eyes was rubbing his hands in
joy; the door led directly into Dada's room. What more could he wish for? But
when he demanded the exact location of the hidden door, Ugo refused. He would
name the location only on the condition that he himself would participate in
the raid on the family members and would lead the way.
- I have my own scores to settle, separately with the
Padrone and separately with his spawn! - Ugo declared. By 'spawn', he meant
Zeki and Dada. - That's why I've been dragging out the time for so long. I was
investigating the information I needed!
The man with the dangerous eyes pondered. What Ugo told
him sounded like the truth, but to what extent could this man be trusted now?
- Is it worth trusting you again? - he stared into his
eyes, squinting.
- I told you! I have my own interests, that's why I'm
even agreeing to a small reward!
- I don't know... I don't know... - the man with the
dangerous eyes shook his head suspiciously.
- As you can see, our interests coincide. Let's take care
of this business together, and then you will go your way and I will go mine!
The man with the dangerous eyes was still hesitating a
little, then he looked at the gypsies.
The gypsies agreed silently; there were many of them,
while Ugo was alone—and as for Dada, what would it take to overcome her? It was
an easy task.
After some hesitation, the man with the dangerous eyes
finally agreed, although his heart was still uneasy.
Late at night, the gypsies slowly swarmed the Padrone's
estate. Everything went as planned; two men never left Ugo's side, sticking to
him even too closely. The man with the dangerous eyes had even doubled the
reward for those two gypsies and promised them the largest share of the loot.
Ugo understood everything anyway, but acted as if he
didn't notice. How could anything escape such an experienced man? He had known
from the start that the man with the dangerous eyes no longer trusted him and
would not spare him. After all, who forgives betrayal so easily?
It was clear that they intended to kill him too, only
using him to get the job done first.
Ugo was consumed only by the desire to save Dada, but he
had no idea how or in what way he would manage that. The main thing was that he
would stop at nothing to somehow protect Dada from danger, and if necessary, he
would sacrifice his own life.
He had not revealed the secret entrance, although they
had brought it up many times in conversation, as if by accident, approaching it
from this side and that. But Ugo stubbornly refused to disclose it.
"Follow me when we get there, and then you will find out," he would
say.
The man with the dangerous eyes' eyes narrowed with anger
and his face flushed, but he restrained himself. He thought to himself,
"Just a few more hours, and I will be able to breathe freely." This
time he was much more bitter, and he wanted to destroy the Padrone with even
more ferocity. He would not leave anyone alive. He would slaughter Dada like a
pig right before the Padrone's eyes, and then he would slaughter the distraught
Padrone on top of her. That was his plan: Dada had to die first, and necessarily
in front of the Padrone. That was what mattered most to him. The man with the
dangerous eyes fidgeted with joy. He could not sit still in anticipation of
those happy moments. "After all, I deserve to live in peace too," he
thought.
